Menuki antique 古代の目貫

Here you will find our selection of Menuki 目貫.

Menuki are decorative, ornamental pieces placed on both sides of the handle (Tsuka) of a sword.

Historically, Menuki gave a better grip on the handle. Menuki can be found on very old Tachi swords from the Heian period, where they were directly glued and inlaid onto the ray skin (Same) covering the handle. Today, and ever since handles have been wrapped with cotton, silk or leather braiding, Menuki are generally placed under this wrapping, which makes them less visible.

As with Tsuba, Menuki are particularly elaborate pieces, highly prized by collectors.
