Here you will find our selection of Fuchi Kashira 縁頭.
Fuchi Kashira are decorative, ornamental pieces placed at both ends of the handle (Tsuka) of a sword.
Historically, the Fuchi and Kashira strengthened and reinforced the handle: they hold together the two wooden halves surrounding the tang of the blade. On very old Tachi swords from the Heian period, some high-end Kashira were shaped like a phoenix head. During the Muromachi period, a time of great wars, these pieces became more sober. It was in the Edo period, as with Tsuba, that craftsmen turned them into works of art again, using the same techniques as for Menuki.
As with Tsuba, Fuchi Kashira are particularly elaborate ornamental pieces, highly prized by collectors.
