In Japanese culture, clouds represent impermanence, and constant transformation, fundamental principles in many Japanese schools of thought. In martial arts, clouds represent fluidity, adaptability and unpredictability, qualities required at a high level of martial practice.
In Japanese imagination and mythology, clouds are carriers of divine messages and sometimes even of divinities themselves, representing a 'bridge' between the earthly and the divine.
It is also the symbol of Toyokumono no Kami (豊雲野の神), "the god of abundant clouds and fruitful fields" who is among the first great Japanese divinities, creators of the universe and of Japan, cited in the Kojiki.
