Tengu (天狗) are a type of legendary creature in the popular Japanese religion, and they are also considered as shinto gods (kami) or yōkai.
Tengu are associated with the ascetic practice known as Shugendō. Tengu are strange creatures, symbolizing the two opposite sides of life, good and evil.
The two main tengu, the Hanataka Tengu (鼻高天狗) with a long nose representing a red-faced Yamabushi, and the Karasu Tengu (烏天狗), with a corbeau face.
The couple Hanataka Tengu and Karasu Tengu surrounding Fudō Myō are found in Yakuoin Temple on Mount Takao 高尾山, north of Tokyo, a Shinto-Buddhist temple that has been a pilgrimage site for 1,000 years.
