The dragon in Japan symbolizes power, good fortune and strength. It is also associated with traits of good omen such as intelligence, ambition and charisma.
There are two specific dragons that can be found in some temples and shrines: the rising dragon and the descending dragon. The ascendant is called "Nobori ryū" 上り龍 and the descendant "Kudari ryū" 下り龍.
The rising dragon represents the ascent to spiritual enlightenment and wisdom. It is often seen rising in the sky or flying above clouds. It is associated with the element of air and is believed to bring good fortune and success.
The descending dragon represents the descent from heaven to earth, after reaching enlightenment, to help humanity. It represents compassion, kindness and protection. It is also associated with the element of water and is believed to bring healing and purification.
They are highly respected and revered for their power and benevolence.

It is represented here in the style of the Mino Province which has been very prolific in the field of forging.
