The Uchiko 打 粉 is one of the elements isuitable for servicing a steel blade.
Often considered the last step of polishing, it allows, by friction with the Nuiguigami, to remove impurities and possible surface oxidation, giving the steel a better shine.
The Uchiko consists of a ball of cloth filled with very fine abrasive powder, all mounted on a small handle. The word Uchiko is composed of kanji 打'hitting, hammering' and 粉 'powder'.
You just need to come tap your blade every 5 to 10 cm, then stretch this powder with the rice paper in rubbing along the length of the blade. You can then admire the cleaned steel and put back Abura oil.
Uchiko is a regular maintenance product, it does not allow for real traditional polishing.
