More informations about this product
This incense holder is shaped like a Koneko (子 猫 - little cat, kitten-) holding a ball with its paw (which allows to position the incense baton). The cats were introduced to Japan around the 7th or 9th century, during the Nara or Heian eras. Their work was to protect the sacred Buddhist texts from rats, and they were also used more prosaically to protect the rice reserves from rodents. There are several references to cats in the ancient texts, the cat being often associated with wisdom, and several tales narrate cat exploits on how they wisely catch ferocious rats that others could not catch.
This incense holder can be used as such with the incense holder provided.
