Study & Team Review |
Takahashi Nobuhide 高橋信秀 was born in 1845 in Imabari, Ochi district in the Ehime prefecture (Shikoku island). His civil name is Ichi Shousaemon 越智庄左衛門. Upon Imabari clan request, he moved to Edo (Tokyo) to study the smithing under Takahashi Naganobu 高橋長信 (sudent of Chounsai Tsunatoshi) as his adoptive son, and was predestined to be his heir. However in 1865, he splitted from the Takahashi family and moved to Osaka to study under the famous Gassan Sadakazu 月山貞一. He studied under Gassan for 2 years. Afterwards, starting from 1867, he started to smith on his own account in the towns of Imabari and Osaka. Unfortunately, there was few products from him, as in 1876, the Japanese government edicted the forbid of swords wearing in public places, the Haitôrei ( 廃刀令 ). At these times, and with the will to modernize the Japan, the warrior culture of the samurai was set aside, and many smiths were out of work, or had to adapt their smithing knowledge in other fields, like kitchen knives for exemple. Nobuhide did officially smith on his own account for only 9 years (1867 to 1876). |
