The Kasa is today the Japanese umbrella but it can also represent a parasol.
The Kasa appeared in Japan at the end of the Heian period, around the 10th century. It was associated with religious and political figures of power and authority.
White skin being a criterion of beauty and nobility, women used parasols a lot to protect themselves from the sun. This differentiated them from the peasant classes who worked under the sun and had dark skin.
In Buddhism, the umbrella is a symbol of royal authority and protects against evil forces and evil spirits. Protection against the various obstacles of life and bad weather, it signifies joy and happiness.
