The mantis is known as a heralding of autumn in Japanese decoration.
This insect is admired in Japan for its patience, strategy, courage and predatory nature.
Patience and strategy because she waits patiently, almost motionless, for her opponent to approach to attack her.
Courage and audacity because whatever her opponent, she does not refuse the fight.
For these reasons, the Mantis was a very popular symbol of the Samurai: it hunts and protects the rice fields from harmful insects, which is the image of the Samurai as a protector in society.
The Mantis, a precursor of autumn, is associated with the natural cycle of life-of-death (adults die after laying in November and eggs hatch in spring).
Crossing a Mantis can therefore be a harbinger of death for the one who crosses it.
