Fudō Myō is the wrathful manifestation of one of the 5 Wisdom Kings 五大明王, Acalanatha or Acala in Sanskrit, he represents immutability. He is a protector of Buddhism and aims to protect those who seek to achieve enlightenment from demons.
His powerful and threatening posture represents his ability to defeat negative forces and illusions that hinder the path to enlightenment. His fierce facial expression is supposed to terrify demons and obstacles, inciting them to abandon their evil deeds and turn to the path of dharma, the path of spiritual awakening. His flaming sword symbolizes the ability to cut through ignorance and dispel illusions, thus allowing one to achieve clarity of consciousness and ultimate wisdom.
He holds an immobile rope in his left hand which symbolizes the faculty of perfect concentration to bring the practitioner back to the right path. In his right hand, the vertical sword connecting heaven and earth represents the penetrating knowledge that allows one to fight the “three poisons”: greed, anger and ignorance.
Its handle in the shape of a vajra or “diamond-lightning” represents the indestructibility and efficiency that overcome all obstacles.
His two canines, one pointing towards Heaven (Spirit) and the other towards Earth (matter), break all obstacles and his closed mouth destroys the breath of the reincarnations of beings.
The flames that surround him represent the consumption of passions, symbolizing his power of purification and transformation.
