This floral arrangement brings together seven autumn plants including bush clover (Hagi 萩), Japanese vine (Kuzu 葛), Japanese silver grass (Obana 尾花), pratinia (Ominaeshi 女郎花), fringed pink (Nadeshiko 撫子), Joe-pye weed (Fujibakama 藤袴), and balloon flower (Kikyo 桔梗).
We can also find other flowers and plants in these autumnal arrangements such as chrysanthemum (Kiku 菊), maple (Momiji 紅葉), Japanese bindweed (Hirugao 昼顔), rose of Sharon (Mukuge 木槿), pampas grass (Susuki 薄).
These 7 herbs (Nanakusa 七草) refer to an ancient poem by Yamanoue No Okura 山上 憶良 (660-733), an aristocrat of the Nara period who traveled to China on missions to the Tang court. They evoke the contemplation of the ephemeral beauty of autumn, symbolizing the transitory nature of life and its manifestations.
This concept is Mono no aware (物の哀れ), a Japanese aesthetic and spiritual concept, which can be translated as "empathy to the ephemerality of existence", used by Motoori Norinaga in his interpretation of Genji monogatari 源氏物語, The Tale of Genji, one of the founding documents of Japanese culture.
