Millet is one of the oldest cereals cultivated in Japan, during the Jomon period, around 4000 BC.
Since ancient times, millet was celebrated and used as an offering during the Niiname-No-Matsuri festival, a festival celebrating the harvest and thanking the gods. It is one of the 5 main cereals of Japan, gokoku 五穀.
Millet is a low-calorie cereal, it was mainly consumed by peasants. The noble classes consumed rice. This is why millet is very little used in clan coats of arms.
On the other hand, it is used to make sweets, mixed with rice, and to make Mochi.
Its harvest being from the end of September to the beginning of October and its use for the manufacture of Mochi make it a symbol of autumn and Tsukimi (contemplation of the moon).
