The Gunbai and the Sahai were used on the battlefields from the Tensho period, around 1570.
The Gunbai is the command (軍配) range, usually of the Uchiha form (団扇), which does not fold.
This command staff was used by generals, going as far as the Daimyo engaged on the battlefield to guide their troops.
It is now used by professional Sumo referees.
The Saihai (采配), command staff, was also used to command on the battlefield, and its decoration denoted the rank of its bearer.
Saihai is also used as a ceremonial stick by the Kannushi (神主), the divine masters of ceremonies in the Shinto religion, who are intermediaries between the Kami and ordinary humans. Traces of it can be found in the Kojiki and Nihon Shoki.
We have the two attributes of high-ranking Samurai in temporal and spiritual.
