The rat is the first sign of the Asian zodiac. It is considered a symbol of industry and prosperity because of its ability to locate, acquire and accumulate food reserves. In Japan it is often associated and drawn with the deity Daikoku, deity of wealth, commerce and trade.
It is also a symbol of luck.
Salmon are also considered symbols of wealth, as well as harmony and peaceful family life. They are common offerings to the deities and a dish often cooked for the new year. Fish are associated and drawn with the deity Ebisu, deity of fishermen, merchants and prosperity.
This motif can therefore symbolically represent two of the deities of happiness, Daikoku and Ebisu, two deities very often represented together.
