This Tsuba is nicknamed Hanjiro, named after Hanjiro Nakamura 中村半次郎.
He used this type of Tsuba on his Koshirae, which gave his name to this form.
Hanjiro Nakamura, whose civil name was Kirino Toshiaki (桐野利秋), was one of the 4 famous Hitokiri (Killer) of the Bakumatsu (1853-1868). He practiced the Ko Jigen Ryu school, a fearsome and powerful style favoring frontal attacks. The 4 Hitokiri (killer) of the Bakumatsu, favorable to the emperor, were reputed to be invincible, which is why the Shinsen Gumi was created to oppose them and defend the Shogun.
He became a brigadier general during the early years of the Imperial Japanese Army. However, he joined Takamori Saigō's forces during the Satsuma Rebellion, participating in the march north to Kumamoto. Particularly fond of French cologne, he even wore it during his final battle at Shiroyama, a battle that inspired the movie "The Last Samurai". Hanjiro stayed with Saigō until the end, where he was eventually killed on the battlefield.
The Udenake Ana, 2 small holes on the lower part of the Tsuba, were made to pass a strap attached to the wrist, allowing the sword not to fall if the hand were to let go.
