The Hyotan (瓢箪), once hollowed out and dried, was used as a gourd for water, sake, seeds, and sometimes even as a vase for flowers. The Hyotan is a climbing plant that grows like ivy or vines, with heart-shaped leaves, and its fruits hanging. Its white flowers open during summer nights.
It is a symbol of good luck, protection and good health. More generally in Japanese culture, the Hyotan is a talisman against evil spirits, and brings luck and prosperity to its owner.
The Hyotan also became one of the symbols on Toyotomi Hideyoshi's war banners, also recalling his peasant origins.
