Karakusa 唐草, Arabesque, is a motif imported from China during the Nara period (710-794). The Kanji 'Kara' 唐 means 'China, foreign, Tang dynasty (618-907)' and the Kanji 'Kusa' 草 means 'plants'. Even older traces of this motif can be found in Mesopotamian, Egyptian and Greek cultures.
It is a motif that can be found on many supports, ceramics, metals, fabrics, lacquers.
The arabesque motif is not a plant in itself but often takes the form of a vine or ivy growing, pushing and spreading endlessly in all directions in spirals.
It is a symbol of good omen and good health, representing the vital force growing. It is also a symbol of expansion through new branches growing on old ones, a symbol of a growing family. For all this, it has also become a symbol of prosperity, longevity and eternity.
