This Tsuba has a design quite typical of the Owari school, from the province of Owari. This region is today the prefecture of Aichi, including the city of Nagoya. During the Sengoku Jidai, the province of Owari was ruled by Oda Nobunaga, the first of the three reunifiers of Japan, and a feared warlord.
The Owari school began during the Muromachi period (1336-1573), and reached its peak during the Sengoku era at the end of the Muromachi era. The Tsuba of this school were often very ornate in Sukashi opening, they were thick and made of a steel with a grainy finish. They were Tsuba very appreciated by the Samurai.
This model presents 2 Warabi-Te (蕨手), fern crooks, in each lobe. We then speak of "ferns of the 4 directions" "四方蕨手". Young fern shoots are symbols of spring, freshness and youth.
The name Warabi was also used for ancient swords from eastern Japan around the Nara period (710-794), with a curved handle, and which are called Warabi-To 蕨手刀.
The Warabi shape is also found as an ornament on roofs, palanquins, lanterns...
