Higo (肥後) schools were located in the modern Kumamoto region on Kyushu Island, in the area of the same name. They had a reputation for making resistant constructions, especially in the context of Korean invasions.
The Boke (木瓜) or Mokko form is that of the Japanese Quince, a shrub with pretty flowers in shades of red, which bloom in late winter, or early spring.
Given its resistance to weather conditions, it is a symbol of resistance to life’s difficulties and the ability to overcome them.
