This Tsuba represents a warrior in armor on horseback on the upper part and wave patterns on the lower part. It is a reproduction of a tsuba made by Mogarashi Nyudo Soten 藻柄子入道宗典, Edo period.
The Soten school, founded by Kitagawa Soten, dates from the mid-17th century (around 1650). It is located in Hikone, in the Omi province, surrounding Lake Biwa.
The works of this school are known for their Sukashi opening work and gilding, called Maru Bori Zogan. The patterns are also richly overlaid and very typical, based on scenes representing Chinese legends or Japanese warriors, notably on the theme of the Genpei War between the Taira and the Minamoto, in the 12th century.
