This Tsuba represents two cranes (Tsuru - 鶴) with wings spread and facing each other.
The term Mukai 向い can mean 'in opposition', 'facing', 'on each side'.
The Japanese crane, graceful and elegant with its white plumage bordered in black, is a symbol of longevity, loyalty and happiness. Legend has it that the crane can live 1000 years, so if you make 1000 cranes in Origami, wishes will come true.
The Mukai Tsuru symbol was used by the Ishikawa branch of the Mikawa Province clan. This clan claims to be descended from the great Minamoto No Yoshiie (1039-1106). It is said that Minamoto No Yoshiie's son, Minamoto No Yoshitoki, took the name Ishikawa. In the 16th century, Ishikawa Kazumasa (1534-1609) served the Daimyo Toyotomi Hideyoshi and Tokugawa Ieyasu.
