This crane that spreads its wings is a strong symbol of Japan. It is an important and well-known symbol of Japan, longevity (it was thought to live 1000 years), luck and wisdom.
The crane is used as a Shinmon (神紋) temple symbol, for the Shinto Tsurugaoku shrine in Kamakura. It is a reference to the crane that was released by the founder of the shogunat of Kamakura, Minamoto no Yoritomo (1147 - 1199).
This temple is dedicated to Hachiman, who is the guardian deity of the samurai, which explains why we find this symbol on many swords.
