Description | Description: Tsuba Set for Daisho in Iron, Maru-Gata (round), Ko Sukashi Bori (partial openwork), with Bunbōshihō (brush, paper, ink, ink stone) decoration. Gold inlays with the Nunomezogan (damascening) technique. Special Features: The 4 Treasures of Literature, the Bunbōshihō are 4: Brush (筆 fude), paper (和 紙 washi), ink (墨 sumi), and ink stone (硯 suzuri). They express the search for excellence in the arts of calligraphy, very difficult to master. Often such people were versed in poetry, literature and more generally in the arts of letters. This decor refers to Bunburyōdō’s maxim 文 武 両 道: the arts of letters Bun (文) and the arts of war (武), the two (両) ways (道). This maxim was promoted under the Shogunate Tokugawa, to push the Samurai to excel in both ways of literature and war equally thoroughly, with the aim of helping (or keeping them busy), from the era of warring kingdoms to an era of peace. |
