In the Japanese theatre, Hannya 般若 depicts a woman turned in 'snake woman', with a demon face with horns. She also wears intense and sad metal eyes, and a smile of pure madness. It is the theatrical portrait of the spirit of a woman who became a demon by obsession and jealousy. It presents mainly two facets of emotions, anger and wrath, but also pain and torment. It represents the complexity of human emotions.
In Buddhism, Hannya 般若 is a principle of knowledge and wisdom. This term designates intuition as a means of perception of the phenomena of interdependence, in the broad sense of the term, as much between beings, objects, as between events. The interdependence of beings is realized through gestures, sensations, perceptions, thought, consciousness... to have consciousness and perceive these elements requires a great knowledge, leading to a great wisdom, Hannya.
There is a notion of overcoming the ego, and awareness of the connection of the 'Self' to a universal 'All'.
