Ichimatsu (市松) refers to the pattern of Checkerboard or Chessboard.
This geometric pattern is alternating between dark squares and white squares. It is named after the Kabuki actor Sanokawa Ichimatsu 佐野川市松 (1722-62) who liked to use this type of pattern on his trousers.
During the Meiji period, this motif was also called Genroku Mon'you 元禄文様 or Genroku Koushi 元禄格子. It has been widely used since the Middle Ages in architectural decoration, gardens, fabrics, dyeing, lacquer and interior decoration.
