Naga Maru Gata tsuba (oval). Tsukushi design - Japanese Horsetail (土筆), rounded Maru Mimi border, in Sukashi (openings).
This Tsuba represents Japanese Horsetails, Tsukushi. It is a plant that originated more than 320 million years ago. It can also withstand temperatures as low as -15°C.
Of this resistance, the Tsukushi is a symbol of longevity and aptation.
Tsukushi is a kind of horsetail shoot that emerges from the ground at the height of spring. It is written “brush of earth” because of its resemblance to the shape of a brush.
Because of its interesting shape, it has been depicted in many flower and bird paintings, especially since the Edo period (1603-1868).
This is a growing tsukushi.
