The Nami no Zu 波の図 design is a wave motif.
There are many representations of waves in Japanese patterns and designs.
This refers to large waves, such as in Hokkusai's print, 'The Great Wave off Kanagawa', from the 36 Views of Mount Fuji. Large waves, called Hato 波涛, are a symbol of Yang, representing power, dynamism, energy and fighting spirit.
These waves can also be called Tatsunami 立波 'Standing Waves' or Onami 男波 'Masculine Waves'.
This representation of tumultuous waves is also a representation of the Buddhist concept of impermanence and perpetual motion. It also recalls the great power of nature and the vulnerability of Human in the face of it.
