This Tsuba represents a horse Uma or Ba (馬) turning to admire the Sakura (桜).
It is a reference to the poem written by Hachimantarō, also known as Minamoto no Yoshiie in the Heian period, named Nakosu no Seki (勿来の関). The Nakosu no Seki, would have been composed at the barrier of Nakoso.
This Tsuba pays tribute to the ancient times (missed) and the beauty of Sakura.
By its short life span and the beauty of this phenomenon, Sakura’s flower is also a parallel with the life of samurai and bushi, refined but ephemeral, reminding us that existence is short, especially for its warriors whose lives could suddenly stop in battle.
